National Walking Month – TAKE THE STAIRS to fitness

Its National Walking Month in May and that got us thinking here at i-motion gym; Just what can walking do for your health and fitness goals? We’ve had an idea; we are going to put it to the test!! In the gym we have a Stairmaster, have a go on it sometime this month, see how far you can get and then comment below to let us know how you got on and your workout summary. Let us know how it felt and whether t is something you will use again….

Walking the facts

So what about walking? It’s a form of aerobic exercise that benefits your heart, lungs and waistline, at one point thee was a widespread government campaign just to get everyone in the UK to walk for 30 minutes a day, so it must do something!!

By adding stairs into the equation of walking (in the form of our Stairmaster) you are going to target and strengthen your legs, knees and hips with an aerobic exercise that is lower impact than running. Climbing stairs will increase your heartbeat, which will encourage blood-flow and leads to the release of endorphins; you are going to need them, stair climbing for a duration will get your leg muscles screaming with pain if you go on long enough. The good news is, the endorphins will improve your mental state, dampen the pain and help you to focus on the task in hand, so stair climbing is actually a really good way of building fitness and burning calories.

Some doctors recommend stair climbing as a natural way to improve mental agility, energy levels, boost immune systems and lower the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis and heart disease.

When you are using the Stairmaster it is recommended that you use it for no longer than 60 minutes. Always wear supportive trainers that fit well and always consult a doctor before taking on any new form of exercise or competition. If you are unsure on how to use the Stairmaster please speak to one of our Personal Trainers who are always happy to help.

Good luck in your fitness goals, if you can’t get to the gym, or want to extend your workout, you can always just take the stairs next time you are shopping at the office etc etc… Who knows where it might lead you!!

You know where we are if we can help you in anyway. Team i-motion. #imotioniwn
