Its National Cherry Day today. If you look around most grocers or supermarkets you will see that Cherries are right in season, as are most red fruits, but what are the benefits to eating them and why should they be in your next shopping basket?
Cherries contain a naturally occurring substance called anthocyanin. These help to reduce inflammation in the body and can therefore help with joint movement and general flexibility. Cherries are actually prescribed to help with arthritis and migraines for this reason.
Sleep like a baby….
As our bodies grow we lose (through absorption) the amount of Melatonin that naturally occurs in the body. Melatonin helps our bodies to maintain a sleep pattern and rest properly. By eating Cherries we are able to top these levels up.
Cherries contain lots of antioxidants and therefore help the body to prevent or repair any damage done to cells by free radicals. This means antioxidants help your body to fight disease and stay fit.
Belly fat buster….
Recent research has shown that diets which contain a high amount of Cherries can eat higher fat diets without putting on belly fat. Remember the best diet is one that is balanced and suits you as an individual, putting Cherries in there will do you no harm though!
No Pain. No Pain….
Research on a group of endurance athletes showed that those who consumed a cup and a half of Cherries a day suffered from less muscle pain than those that did not consume Cherries. The naturally occurring anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants helps muscles to recover quicker.
Oxidative Stress occurs from a lack of two important flavonoids, isoqueritrin and queritin, which eliminate toxins in the body and therefore slow down the ageing process. Cherries are full of these important flavonoids; It might not be the key to eternal youth but it will sure help!
