Earlier this week we mentioned that drinking coffee can be beneficial in your workout, and the i-motion faithful took an instant interest in the subject, so we thought we’d explain the facts around it.
Caffeine can certainly help you lose weight, that has been proven in many studies, but how does it help you? and is there anything to consider before you delve into an espresso before every workout?
- Happy muscles
By drinking coffee before a workout you create a better circulation. It can actually improve by up to 30%! The study, conducted in Japan, basically proved that if you drink coffee you get oxygen to your muscles easier. If you can do that you can work them harder – that all means you can workout longer/faster!
- Tougher muscles!
The University of Illinois have proven that caffeine numbs pain sensors. This means that we can push ourselves harder during a workout!
- Younger muscles!
A bovine study (by Coventry University) has shown that caffeine offsets the ageing process of muscles. As muscles age they lose strength. Win!
- Muscle fuel!
If you take carbs following a long hard workout then you may want to consider adding caffeine into the mix. A little caffeine has been proven, by the Journal of Physiology, to help increase glycogen in muscles. Glycogen is lost during extensive workouts and essentially the fuel of the muscle!
It is worth considering that if your preferred coffee includes milk then that can equal extra calories. A regular cappuccino can have as many as 120 calories (without sugar). It is also important to say that everything in moderation, especially a stimulant like coffee. You shouldn’t consume more than 400mg of coffee a day.
If you do decide to try caffeine it is important to keep it regular, this stops your body having peaks and troughs in terms of energy. If you are working out at night avoid coffee, it will interfere with your sleep and this is fundamental to your health. If you drink coffee drink plenty of water – keeping hydrated is of ultimate importance.
