Tea and our Health

A cup of tea makes everything better – or does it?

It’s set to be a long, cold and wet Bank Holiday Weekend! But don’t worry, there is one thing that will make us all feel better, a warm, cosy cup of tea. In Britain we drink 1,650,000 cups of tea a day! And guess what? During quiet times, holidays and periods of quiet time we tend to reach for the mug more often than busy periods. So just how good for us is tea? And is there anything we need to know about the nations favourite drink?

Weight Loss

Tea is full of ‘theaflavins’ and ‘thearubigins’ that help reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the gut. This can in turn help lower cholesterol and vastly improve chances of weight loss. However, a study in Japan has proven that adding milk to our Tea can reduce or counter these benefits.

Cardio Vascular Fitness

Tea is also full of Catechins that help to dilate the blood vessels. This is really important to help us protect against Heart Disease. However, adding milk to Tea counteracts the concentration of Catechins in the Tea.

Digestion

Tea aids digestion, the many herbs and natural flavourings and the warm, clean nature of the water means that it is generally good for the gut. However, milk is not easily digested by the gut, hence if we add it tea it counter acts many of the good properties.

Green Tea

So you may have guessed by now that Tea is good for us, however, when you throw milk into the equation, It becomes a little less healthy. So how about Green Tea? Well its packed with everything we have already discussed, to the same and usually higher levels as normal tea. Beyond that it is full of antioxidants which help us maintain a clear and healthy ‘waterworks’ system. This is important because the Gut, Liver and other vital organs are able to take on nutrients and deal with any nasty substances more efficiently.

Despite common myths, Green Tea does contain caffeine but not as much as coffee. Further to that it contains another stimulant called amino acid L-theanine. This ultimately helps with anxiety, focus and decision making ability. So essentially it helps us become smarter!

Overall Tea is a beneficial addition to your diet, just remember it’s a lot better for you without the milk!!
