With the Christmas period upon us our minds seem to slip from gym to gin, crunches to Christmas pudding and all focus on fitness just becomes well, lost! With the combined period of work parties, family gatherings, travel and new years celebrations there is the real opportunity to lose any progress you’ve made throughout the year. We wanted to give you some top tips to keep you on track this Christmas period.
#1 Be realistic
The festive period is over a month long for some of the hardcore Christmas lovers, to make staying on track possible it becomes hugely important to set some realistic targets over a longer period, this means if you have a naughty couple of days you don’t feel defeated, you still have time to get back on track and thus don’t lose motivation.
#2 Set a weekly target
With the festive period being so busy, one thing we can plan is our weekly activity. If you know you have a couple of nights out in a week then we need to make sure we are disciplined in going to the gym and getting active for the rest of the week. Plan your workouts in advance and use the thought of the night out as an extra bit of motivation.
It may sound a bit far fetched but visualisation is key during periods where motivation is low. Picture yourself being sat down at the meal, with no guilty feeling whatsoever, ready to enjoy a good evening with your friends and family; on the flip side imagine being at the same meal feeling guilty, for what you are about to consume, because you haven’t put the groundwork in. You can break this right down to a day by day basis where you visualise yourself getting to the end of the day having achieved your days targets, or not. Similarly visualise yourself at the end of the three month period, how good will it feel if you kept on track?
#4 Set a challenge
For some people entering a challenge for the following year can really be a great way to stay focused throughout the festivities. If you are going to do this be sure to plan backwards so you know what you need to do month by month to make your challenge possible.
#5 Give yourself a present!
We often associate this time of year with presents so why not get yourself one! Particularly if it helps you stay on track. A new bit of gym kit, accessory or fitness gadget could be just the thing to help you stay on track.

#7 Break the routine
When motivation is low the perfect thing to do is mix up the routine, try a new class, change up what your routine and do something different; it will help keep you interested when you really need it.
