With the New Year well underway we are sure some of you will have been true to your New Years resolutions and will be hitting the gym hard. If you are not seeing the results don’t worry, it WILL happen, you need to persevere.
NOTHING WORTH HAVING COMES EASILY, and good health is definitely worth having!
If you are not getting fitter there may be some basic reasons why, so we thought we’d share some with you.
#1 You are punishing yourself too much!
You didn’t expect that did you? A gym company telling you to calm down! If you have hit the gym super hard and are being super keen on your diet, great. But is it? This simply isn’t sustainable for a few reasons, firstly, you will become bored of flogging yourself and eventually stop altogether, secondly, if you aren’t enjoying it then you will naturally resent exercise, this will, in the long run have the reverse effect. Put together a challenging schedule that has rest days and eat well, remember that doesn’t mean boring (see our food blogs) and have a cheat day once in a while.
#2 Excuses, excuses…
It is the number one reason that people don’t get fitter, we live busy, temptation filled lives and there can always be an excuse not to go the gym. Remember when you say you aren’t going to the gym you are effectively saying you aren’t going to work on your personal health, be disciplined, plan your week so you can fit the gym and social events and make the gym a priority.
#3 Reward yourself
By reward yourself we don’t mean go out and have a binge night because you lost 1lb. But we do mean celebrate the fact that you have lost some weight. When you start on your fitness journey you should always have clear, measurable goals and as you move towards them celebrate them, ALL OF THEM!
#4 Negative influences
How many people started Dry January this year? 17% of the UK population.
How many people will complete dry January this year? About 8% of the UK population.
If those 17% of the UK population were left to their own devices the likelihood is that they would complete Dry January, however as one person in a group of friends or social group falls ‘off the wagon’ then it becomes easier for others to do the same. The same goes with gym users and diet or results. If you are starting to make a difference and lose a small amount of weight some people might mock that effort. These negative influences are likely to make you quit OR you can change your mindset and make it so you are more determined to complete.
Get rid of negative influencers in your life and get the results you want!
#5 You aren’t doing the right thing
For some people starting the gym in January and hitting it hard is the goal. This is far too broad a goal. There is SO MUCH you can do at a gym to help you reach your goals. Depending what they are you need to spend your time in the gym doing High Intensity Interval Training, Cardio-Vascular Training, Weight Training and so on…. Make sure you try classes and different workout routines. If you are still struggling speak to one of our Personal Trainers for some tailored advice.
