Christmas doesn’t have to mean that you pile on the pounds…
Don’t wait for the New Year, don’t put off your exercise goals “because its Christmas” and here is why. Many people say that the main reason they don’t exercise is due to not having time, well at Christmas once all of the festivities are over many of us can have a little extra time on our hands, so why not head down to the gym.
Why should we stay active we hear you ask? It cannot only help you to stay trim but it can also help to reduce your stress levels, get you energised and it give you a much needed mental break. We all love spending time with our loved ones but sometimes it is nice to have some time to yourself and what better way than to indulge in some exercise.
If you can get yourself into a routine of exercising first thing in the morning, it could be the key to success. It not only kick-starts your day but also your metabolism for the day; The consequence is you burn calories more effectively throughout the day and enjoy the many treats that will be offered to you at this time of year.
Your workouts don’t need to take you hours and we’re sure at this super busy period the quicker you can finish, the better. In recent studies it has shown that a 20 minute High Intense workout burns more calories than a 40 minute steady workout. Why not try one of our really popular HIIT classes…short, sharp and effective or even a spin class which is guaranteed to get your Heart Rate soaring.
When it comes to the festive treats you can also help yourself out here. Try simple things like cutting out bread and bad carbs. Try to eat healthy snacks in between meals so you aren’t so hungry when the naughty nibbles are put out in front of you. And when they are try to choose healthier nibbles such as pretzels, roast chestnuts, unsalted nuts or dried fruits.
We’ve all heard people say “I’ll start Monday”, and at this time of year that can slip to “I’ll start next year” but don’t let the busy festive period get in your way of reaching your fitness goals. Lay some basic foundations now and then you will be ready to really kick on in the New Year. When it comes to setting targets for 2018 here are some basic tips:
Be Realistic – don’t think that you’ll start working out on the 2nd January and go from zero to gym fanatic overnight. Start by easing yourself in and find something you enjoy.
Set Goals – Spend time thinking about what you want to achieve both for your fitness and health. Make your goals challenging but realistic and most of all be confident that you WILL achieve them. Review them regularly.
Be Patient – Set yourself mini goals so rather than saying I want to lose 3 stone break that down into how many pounds per week and that way it seems more achievable. Remember Slow Progress is better than No Progress!
Keep Track – Keep a food and exercise diary will help you to monitor your progress and keep you motivated and focused on your goals.
