It’s happening, the days are getting longer, it’s already a couple of months into the year and people are now well and truly woken up to 2018. But what about that new fitness regime we promised ourselves? For some of us it’s just a case of getting going and we have put together these Top Tips to help you.
1) Set the time aside
You really do have to be realistic here. This is a commitment you are making to YOURSELF so you need to prioritise it. The habit of spending time working on your fitness and making yourself feel better is a good one to have! Figure out what time you can allocate to your regime and commit to it. Even if it a small amount, it will make a difference.
2) Get real
The biggest reason people quit with their fitness regime is because they don’t get instant results. If it was that either then no one would do it. Tell yourself from the outset that it will be tough. You will have to put yourself out of your comfort zone and even acquire new knowledge. By the way these are all great “side-effects” from joining a gym. When the tough times hit have an end goal in mind and keep moving forward.
3) Plan it out
You don’t have to plan to be a miracle weight-loss story or transformation sensation. Just plan to get fitter, have some basic goals at first. How long will you spend WORKING OUT (not stood around in the gym)? How many classes will you attend? How frequently will you visit the gym? From here you can develop your plan as you get into your fitness routine.
4) Don’t worry about others
Everyone has started his or her fitness journey somewhere. The first time you set foot in a gym it can be intimidating. At i-motion we have excellent, friendly staff and up to 400 classes to choose from to get you started. In the gym we have GB athletes, bodybuilders and people that run for hours and hours! They all started somewhere and will do nothing than applaud anyone who is seeking to their own fitness path. Go for it…
5) Ease into it
When you find yourself at the Dumbbells or setting the time limit on the Treadmill don’t feel you have to push yourself. The result will only be injury. Pick a weight you are comfortable with, run a distance that pushes you but doesn’t break you. The main thing is you look to build on it in future weeks.
6) Mix it up
There is nothing worse than going into the gym and doing the same workout day in day out. You will only ever work the same muscles, which will limit your results, and you will mentally become fatigued, it’s only a matter of time before you pack it in and leave the gym alone. Take time to stop and re-plan your fitness journey at least monthly.
7) Buddy up
Statistically you are far more likely to carry on your fitness journey if you join the gym with a friend, use a class or a trainer. The benefits are three fold, firstly you feel less intimidated, secondly you are more willing to try new exercises and classes and thirdly you will feel much more motivated.
