It may seem like it’s a long time off but summer will be here before you know it. If you’ve got holiday plans and want to look great on the beach then now is the time to start getting ready for Summer.
The thing about weight loss is that it takes time. Some even say that “summer bodies are made in winter”. Of course, it is best to keep active and maintain a good level of fitness year round. But assuming that your approach to winter was a little more casual (i.e. less exercise, more food, alcohol and TV), don’t panic! It’s not too late to make sure you hit the beach feeling fit, energetic and confident in your body.
Twelve, even sixteen weeks is plenty of time to get yourself into great shape. You can approach your fitness regime at a slow to a steady pace. This is especially important if you are out of shape to begin with. You cannot just hit the gym 5-6x a week for a couple of weeks before your holiday and expect to see the results you want. Your body needs adequate time to adapt. Too much too quickly and you will risk exhaustion, injury and/or illness, three things that you definitely don’t want to be experiencing on holiday. By starting now you can commit to a less intense regime of three gym sessions a week and feel energised every step of the way!
The most important thing to note is how vital it is for you to have an exercise plan that you can stick to. Most people fail to stick with exercise because they don’t have a plan and get disheartened when they don’t see immediate results. Having a training programme means that you can avoid doing identical daily workouts or wandering into the gym and doing “whatever”. This doesn’t get great results. By following a well-devised plan, your body can change a lot in just a few months. If you’re not, it probably won’t.
The same principles apply to your diet. You cannot depend on starving yourself thin. This is neither an effective or healthy way to get the body you want. It is better to devise a healthy meal plan that you can stick to long-term. If you cut out everything you enjoy, or worse, starve yourself in a desperate attempt to shed the pounds, all you should expect is exhaustion, illness and injury (sound familiar).
The overarching theme here is time and patience. Create a 12-16week diet and training plan that is realistic and enjoyable. By starting now you have more than adequate time to get the summer body you want.
